2022 LASE Insight Series Workshop
August 9, 2022

Have you had students struggle to remember what was taught the previous year, semester, or even last month? Have you had students internalize failure? There are reasons, researched reasons why this happens. Patrice Bain, veteran teacher and co-author of Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning, knows the rigor required for the classroom. Having worked with cognitive scientists for over fifteen years, Bain developed teaching strategies based on robust research that improve learning. Best of all, these strategies don’t add to your already filled plates but will streamline what you are already doing. In this engaging and interactive workshop, Patrice Bain will unlock the research and provide evidence-based strategies that will transform your teaching so that all students will be successful learners.
In these workshops, educators will:
- Learn the research behind: Retrieval, Spacing, Interleaving Feedback-driven Metacognition
- Grasp how simple changes to what you are already doing will increase student learning
- Identify how cognitive load, working memory, and desirable difficulties play a role in learning
- Explore new ways to work with parents
- Leave with a repertoire of tools and strategies to use the first day of school

Patrice M. Bain Ed.S is passionate about student success using research-based strategies. As a veteran k-12 teacher, Patrice completed more than 25 years teaching social studies at a middle school in Illinois. Fifteen of those years included working closely with cognitive scientists turning research into authentic learning strategies for classrooms. Patrice is co-author of Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning. She was one of two teachers in the country to be on the working task group: Neuromyths vs. Neurotruths, sponsored by the Institute of Educational Sciences (IES) and the National Commission of Education Research (NCER).
