Understanding Trauma: What Educators Need to Know

Presented by Dr. Deanne (Dede) McCullough
Director of Trauma-Informed Programs at Missouri Baptist University

In the years since COVID-19 disrupted our schools, our classrooms—and our students—have changed in profound ways. The pandemic did not just interrupt learning; it intensified stress, isolation, and instability for many children. As educators, we have seen firsthand the emotional toll this has taken. Today, more students are walking into our classrooms struggling with anxiety, unable to regulate their emotions, and facing difficulty forming friendships or managing conflict. Many cannot sit still or focus. The traditional ways of teaching and managing behavior simply are not enough anymore. Teachers are not just delivering curriculum—they are supporting kids who are overwhelmed, dysregulated, and sometimes even in survival mode. This is why understanding trauma, and adopting trauma-informed practices, has become essential.

Join us for an informative and practical presentation designed to equip educators with essential knowledge about trauma and its profound impact on students of all ages. This keynote will explore the prevalence and various types of trauma—including Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—and how they influence learning, behavior, and emotional regulation in the classroom. Participants will gain insight into the signs of trauma- related responses in students and learn how to differentiate between trauma-informed, trauma-sensitive, and trauma-responsive approaches. Whether you’re a teacher, counselor, or school administrator, this presentation will provide valuable tools to create a supportive and effective learning environment for all students.
